Arsenal English: Arsenal v Cambridge United (1991) Welcome to today's "Arsenal English" exercise helping non-native Gooners all over the world to improve their English ability. Today's activity is an "Advanced" level exercise consisting of a video from the 1991 FA Cup match against Cambridge United. You will need to listen closely to the commentary from the game and answer the questions below. The match is remembered by Arsenal fans as they welcomed back Tony Adams' into his first first-team match back at Highbury after a spell in prison for drunk driving. Cambridge were a smaller club who had brought 12,000 supporters with them to Highbury for their big day. I was at this game watching with my mum and brother down at the front of the West Stand. Enjoy the video and good luck with the questions. The commentary script is available afterwards. Listening for Information 1. Which round of the Cup is it? 2. From the Arsenal squad of 13, how many Arsenal players came from Arsenal's youth policy? 3. How old is David Hillier? 4. How many games did Danny O'Shea play for Arsenal? 5. What number do the Cambridge United players Dion Dublin and John Taylor wear on their shirt? 6. How many goals had the two of them scored over the last year and a half? 7. Including the winning goal, how many goals had Adams scored that season? Arsenal V Cambridge United Commentary: "Highbury acclaims an Arsenal team who after two away wins are now favourites to win the FA Cup and League double. And many feel are set to be the dominant team of the 90s. And as the programme notes for today's Quarter Final proudly point out. Arsenal's success is built around home grown players. 8 of Arsenal's 13 today graduated through the club's own youth policy. And the latest of them, 21 year old David Hillier, who was Captain of their FA Youth Cup winning team in 1988, is again preferred in midfield to Paul Davis who is named as a substitute.. Indeed it's the same team and substitutes that played against both Liverpool and Shrewsbury. It's a big day too for Danny O'Shea whom Arsenal rejected. Danny O Shea played nine games over 4 seasons at Highbury before they let him go at the age of 21. Now he's back as captain of 3rd Division Cambridge who only came back into the league back in 1970 and are now playing the biggest match in their short history. And the two to look for as Sheffield Wednesday found to their cost in the previous round are number 9 Dion Dublin and number 10 John Taylor, who between them have scored 77 goals in little over a season and a half. ..was back in 1983 and lost to Manychester UNited. WInterburn's cross. Oh a great goal. Campbell's glancing header and it was just wide of John Vaughn. A really good cross by Nigel Winterburn but what a perfectly glanced header this is by Kevin Campbell …the merest of touchest and it's right beyond the goalkeeper's fingers and in at the far post.. ..just before Taylor. Taylor won that one though. Cheetham…appeals for handball. Still Cheetham. Cross for Dublin. He got a touch. Oh it's in! Dion Dublin! Looped it over the top of David Seaman and Cambridge have equalized. So David Seaman won't keep a clean sheet in this match. What a great cross by Cheetham and what an unorthodox finish by Dion Dublin. Maybe that's what confused Seaman . But where does it hit him? IN fact looking at it again, there may have even of been a deflection off Tony Adams. Adams. Bould chipped up to the far post..Smith. Adams! It's 2-1 Arsenal. Now, will they give that to Tony Adams? No doubt from his reaction that Tony Adams is claiming it. He might have had a shot earlier. Bould chipped up to the far post to Smith. A good save from Vaughn it wouldn't have gone in. Adams has scored his 4th of the season. And the whistle goes. Arsenal are through to the semi finals. 2-1 victors over third division Cambridge and the talking point, well, certainly will involve Tony Adams. Did he score at both ends? He certainly appeared… [cuts out] … and score after Vaughn had saved from Alan Smith's header. On his first game back here since the middle of December, a goal from Tony Adams has put Arsenal into the Semi Finals of the FA Cup for the seventeenth time in their history. Arsenal well worth it. But Cambridge deserve the applause that they're getting not only from their own fans but from the Arsenal fans as well. "George, you said in the programme notes that…" [ends]"
